Let customers create a product that meets their needs

Let customers create a product that meets their needs

Product Configurator offers an alternative to basic attribute selection by providing a clear, step-by-step product configuration process. Customers can conveniently configure furniture, for example, by choosing the fabric (from different price groups), size, finish, leg colour or corner sofa orientation.

In standard PrestaShop, every possible set of attributes must exist as a separate combination. The number of combinations is the product of all available choices: for example, 200 fabrics, 10 leg variants, 2 corner sofa orientations and 10 additional options mean as many as 40,000 combinations for a single product. Such a large catalogue of variants is difficult to update, maintain and render on the server.

The module has its own external mechanism for storing product configurations. A standard PrestaShop attribute combination is created only when the customer completes the configuration and adds the product to the cart.

Instead of displaying many technical attribute lists at once, the module divides configuration into organised steps. Each step can correspond to a different group, such as fabric type, leg colour or corner sofa orientation, as shown in our demo.

Combine several technical groups into one simple choice

Combine several technical groups into one simple choice

Several PrestaShop attribute groups can be combined into a single, simple configuration step for the customer. If fabrics are divided into different collections, ranges or price groups in the back office, the module can present them as one convenient ‘Fabric’ selection.

Customers do not need to think about how attributes are organised internally and can move through the configuration faster. You retain a well-organised catalogue, while the selection process becomes clearer, more intuitive and better suited to selling.

Help customers quickly find the right option

Help customers quickly find the right option

The module groups available options into families based on their names, such as Madrid, Sevilla or Valencia. The administrator can add a description and assign properties to each family. Information about the attribute group is shown to customers directly during configuration.

Show only valid variants and apply surcharges

Show only valid variants and apply surcharges

Not every option needs to be available in every configuration. The administrator can define dependencies between attribute values so that, after an earlier choice, customers see only variants that can be combined with it. This eliminates the risk of creating a configuration that cannot be fulfilled and makes the selection process simpler and more intuitive.

Surcharges can also be assigned to selected attribute groups. The product price updates as the configuration changes, so customers immediately see how much their chosen variant will cost.

Inspire customers with ready-made configurations

Inspire customers with ready-made configurations

The most popular or best-matched sets can be displayed above the configurator as recommended, suggested or popular configurations, with a photo and a clear list of selected attributes. Customers can choose a ready-made suggestion with one click, and all its options are applied automatically in the configurator.

Recommended sets are based on previously prepared product combinations with an assigned photo. The section heading can be defined separately for each store language, making this feature suitable for multilingual sales as well.

Choose a presentation that suits your product page

Choose a presentation that suits your product page

The configurator can be displayed directly on the product page or opened in a separate modal window. In embedded mode, customers configure the product without leaving its page and use the standard ‘Add to cart’ button when they finish selecting options.

Modal mode lets customers start configuration with a dedicated button. They then move through the available options step by step and receive a clear summary of their configuration before adding the product to the cart.

Both modes can use any of the four available configurator styles:

  • classic,
  • with a side menu,
  • with a side summary of the configuration,
  • with a preview of the currently selected options.

This allows you to match the configurator presentation to both the store design and the complexity of the products you offer.

Filters and descriptions for grouped choices

Filters and descriptions for grouped choices

When many variants are available, customers can use additional filters to narrow their choices quickly. For fabrics, these might include material type, ease of cleaning, water-repellent properties or suitability for pets. The store administrator defines the filter names and scope.

Once customers select the properties they are interested in, the configurator automatically keeps only options that meet those criteria visible. This helps them find a suitable variant faster without browsing the entire range.

Create hundreds of colours and textures much faster

Create hundreds of colours and textures much faster

The module adds a ‘Bulk attributes’ tab to the ‘Catalogue’ section of the back office, speeding up the creation of large material collections. Standard values can be pasted as a list of names. For colour or texture groups, you can select colours, upload multiple image files or a single ZIP archive. Attribute names are generated from the file names, and existing values are not added again.

Copy proven settings between products

Copy proven settings between products

A completed configuration can easily be copied from one product to another. This is particularly convenient for similar models that use the same configuration steps, option dependencies, surcharges, descriptions and filters.

Only the configurator settings are copied. Standard product data, photos and manually created combinations remain unchanged, allowing you to set up the configurator for more products quickly without risking overwriting their content.

A configurator for products with many possible variants

The product configurator module is useful wherever standard PrestaShop combination selection is insufficient. It helps organise the selection process and guides users through product configuration step by step.

  • upholstered furniture: choose the model, fabric, colour, leg type or corner sofa orientation,
  • made-to-order products: choose the size, material, finish and additional options,
  • modular sets and products with optional equipment or accessories,
  • clothing and footwear with many colour, material and size variants,
  • technical products whose individual parameters must be compatible with one another.

Even complex products can therefore be presented simply and intuitively, without overwhelming customers with a large number of available variants.

Technical information and performance

Finally, a few technical points are worth mentioning. The configurator module was designed with stability, compatibility and smooth cooperation with other extensions installed in the PrestaShop store in mind.

Our module does not use overrides, so it does not overwrite any standard PrestaShop classes or controllers. This is particularly important for larger stores running many modules at the same time. Avoiding overrides significantly reduces the risk of conflicts when several extensions try to modify the same parts of the system.

This approach also makes future updates to PrestaShop and the module easier. The store remains more transparent from a technical perspective, easier to maintain and troubleshoot, and easier to extend with additional features.

Considerable attention was also paid to performance during development. The module follows good programming practices and is optimised for the PrestaShop environment. It does not perform unnecessary operations or an excessive number of database queries on every page view.

As a result, using the module does not increase loading times for product pages or other store pages. Its operations have been kept to the necessary minimum so that the additional functionality does not come at the expense of store speed.

The module was designed for both smaller stores and larger PrestaShop installations with many products, combinations and additional modules. This keeps the solution maintainable, scalable and suitable for further store development.
